Great Expectations

Last time I wrote, I talked about how each day had been getting better and better, with more and more beautiful hotels and locations with every town we visited. Well, we broke our streak! Our hotel in Avignon brought us back down to Earth.

We stayed at the Cloitre San Louis. From the promotional material on their website, you would think that it was an old monestery or church, repurposed into a chic hotel.

Each of those windows must be a hotel room, right?
Beautiful courtyard on the website
An old hall where the restaurant was set up.
Another courtyard with what Rick Steves calls “Plain Trees,” still images from the site.

We arrived at the hotel around 9 AM, stored our bags and left quickly with our tour guide, Romain, to check out wine regions near by for the whole day. Corbett will post on that when we can get his nice photos uploaded – some challenges with slow WiFi lately. Our wine tours to Chateauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas were really gorgeous, windy, and educational. It was a long day of being buzzed, even though we mostly spit everything out! We got back to Avignon around 5:30 PM.

We got our keys and headed to our room. Wait… why are we walking around the building? What is this new structure, and all these ramps? We ended up in our room and had to laugh.

The only thing old about the rooms were the 80s decor! The structure that all the rooms were in was totally separate from the monastery. No stone to be seen, unless you peered through the totally closed in patio (?) toward the far left. It was built in an alley between two of the older buildings.

The patio being sort of indoors was confusing.

Tiniest 80s-est bathroom.

We didn’t spend a lot of time actually at the hotel, since the next day we were headed to Paris. I’m not sure the weirdness is coming across in the photos. Despite the weird decor and layout, we did sleep really well. I guess we have been spoiled by the few places prior to this, and the Cloitre San Louis will be filed under ‘So Euro.’

Cheers!
